Bonchida three times - Living Dance Archive
Hungarians, Romanians and Roma: three communities who lived side by side in remarkable harmony in the small Transylvanian village of Bonchida. They knew and respected one another’s customs, dances and music. From this extraordinary coexistence of cultures was born Bonchida Three Times, a production by the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble that not only captivates the audience, but also holds up a mirror to us in every sense.
Living Dance Archive
Inspired by the original dance collections of Dr György Martin, and paying tribute to the work of this outstanding scholar, Kossuth Prize-winning choreographer Zoltán Zsuráfszky launched his Living Dance Archive series several years ago.

The Living Dance Archive series transformed Hungarian folk dance on stage by showing what artistically powerful performances can be created from the “pure source” alone. Its productions – Bonchida Three Times, Kalotaszeg, Szatmár, Gyimes, Mezőség and Viharsarok – present the authentic dance traditions and outstanding dance personalities of the regions in question, studied and mastered in exceptional depth and detail. They invite audiences to rediscover the richness and beauty of their own dance and musical culture. Each deep and sincere moment of these performances is a confession of the creator’s devoted love for folk culture.
